Winterfest for the College Bound Tournament Rules
RULES: Winterfest will be played by the same rules CHSAA will use for the 2012 Spring Season, except as set forth below.
CHSAA Coaching Rules: The Sunday CHSAA no contact rule applies to high school coaches on Sunday, January 8th play. Teams should provide a parent or unofficial coach to organize the team. If you need LOF to provide you with coaching assistance on Sunday please let Seaver Baruch know.
FORMAT: SATURDAY ROUND ROBIN PLAY/SUNDAY SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT: The sixteen teams entering Winterfest will be divided into four, 4 team, flights. On Saturday, each team will play three games against the other teams in their flight. Teams will earn two points for a win, one point for a tie (no overtimes will be played), and zero points for a loss. The two teams with the most accumulated points in their flight will advance to the “A” bracket and play in a single elimination tournament on Sunday at Foothills. A trophy will be awarded to the championship team in the A bracket. The two teams with the least accumulated points in their flight will advance to the “B” bracket to be played Sunday at South Suburban. Round Robins ending with two way ties will be decided by the head to head record. Three way ties will be decided by the least number of goals against. If a two way tie occurs after the third team is eliminated the remaining two-way tie will be decided by the head to head record. Any situations that cannot be resolved by the above methods will be decided by tossing a coin.
REVISED RULES – JANUARY 4, 2012 – 14 team format
Round Robin tournament points for the three teams in Flights 2 and 4 will be the same as the other tournament flights (2pts for a win, 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss). After playing a standard three team round robin, the bottom two teams in each flight according to the tournament points will play in a playoff game to determine who will play in the Championship and Consolation brackets on Sunday (Flight 2 #2 will play Flight 2 #3, Flight 4 #2 will play Flight 4 #3). The playoff game is a winner takes all game, where the winner goes to the Championship Bracket on Sunday and the loser goes to the Consolation Bracket on Sunday. In the event of a tie, the winner will be determined in the following manners, taking the playoff game into account: 1) Tournament points 2) Goals Against 3) Score Differential 4) Braveheart. Additionally, Flight 2 #1 and Flight 4 #1 will play in an exhibition game at Foothills at 7pm (This game is offered for the aforementioned teams to play three games on Saturday. Furthermore, the game is at 7pm while I am feeding all of the college coaches at foothills, should be a good audience.)
Sunday the top 8 teams, calculated from the methods described above, will play at Foothills in the Championship Bracket. The remaining 6 teams will play in the Consolation bracket at South Suburban.
CLOCK/PENALTIES/OVERTIME: All games will include two twenty five-minute running halves, a 2-minute half time and there will be 8 minutes between games. Penalties will be assessed at 20 and 40 seconds for technical and personal fouls, respectively. An illegal stick penalty will result in a 2 minute non-releasable penalty. Teams not ready to face off on the hour, and at the start of the second half, will be assessed a 40-second delay of game penalty. Penalty clocks will stop during timeouts, while game clocks will not. Round Robin play will not play overtimes. Single elimination games ending in a tie will continue with two 4-minute sudden death periods until a winner is. If no winner is determined by sudden death overtime, a “Braveheart” contest will determine the winner. Rules for “Braveheart” are as follows: each team fields a goalie and a field player, teams defend same goal they defended in the second half, field players face off at center, goalies must be behind their restraining lines during the faceoff, goalies may not cross midfield, first team to score a goal wins, there are no timeouts or substitutions permitted except in the case of injury (in which case the opponent may also substitute a player), if a team commits what would normally be a timeserving penalty, play is restarted with offended player and ball outside the offending player’s defensive restraining line. The offending player will start one zone behind the attacking for all technical fouls and two zones back for all personal fouls (i.e., fast break)
TIME OUTS: One 1-minute time out is allowed to each team per half. The game clock will not be stopped. Any team winning will not be allowed a time out during the last two minutes of play. Any time out called by the winning team will expire with 2 minutes left to play. A team in a man down situation may not call a time out in the last 2 minutes of either half. Official time outs will not stop the clock. Clock will only stop at the discretion of the officials and on an extremely limited basis. Officials and Tournament Directors reserve the right to shorten future games to get back on schedule so the tournament can be completed on time.
ROSTERS: High school teams entering can only include players who play for the high school team in the spring. High School teams in need of additional players can request free agents. Individuals will have paid a $100 entry fee and cannot be charged again by the high school that picks them up. This allows the LOF to balance the budget for underwriting the event.
